The eleven habits of ridiculously likeable people

The eleven habits of ridiculously likeable peopleThe eleven habits of ridiculously likeable peopleToo many people succumb to the mistaken belief that being likeable comes from natural, unteachable traits that belong only to a lucky few - the good looking, the fiercely social, and the incredibly talented. Its easy to fall prey to this misconception. When I speak to smaller audiences, I often ask them to describe the most likeable people they have ever worked with. People inevitably ignore innate characteristics (intelligence, extraversion, attractiveness, and so on) and instead focus on qualities that are completely under peoples control, such as approachability, humility, and positivity. These qualities, and others like them, describe people who are skilled in emotional intelligence (EQ).TalentSmartresearch data from more than a million people shows that people who possess these skills arent just highly likeable, they outperform those who dont by a large margin. Ninety percent of top performers have high EQs, people with high EQs make $29,000 more annually than people with low EQs, and a single-point increase in your EQ adds $1,300 to your salary. I could go on and on.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreBeing likeable is under your control, and its a matter of emotional intelligence. Unlike innate, fixed characteristics, such as your intelligence (IQ), EQ is a flexible skill that you can improve with effort. To help you improve your EQ, I did some digging to uncover the key behaviors that emotionally intelligent people engage in that make them so likeable. They are genuineBeing genuine and honest is essential to being likeable. No one likes a fake. People gravitate toward those who are genuine because they know they can trust them. It is difficult to like someone when you dont know who they really are and how they really feel.Likeable people know who they are. Th ey are confident enough to be comfortable in their own skin. By concentrating on what drives you and makes you happy as an individual, you become a much more interesting person than if you attempt to win people over by making choices that you think will make them like you. They ask thoughtful questionsThe biggest mistake people make when it comes to listening is theyre so focused on what theyre going to say next or how what the other person is saying is going to affect them that they fail to hear whats being said. The words come through loud and clear, but the meaning is lost. A simple way to avoid this is to ask a lot of questions. People like to know youre listening, and something as simple as a clarification question shows that not only are you listening, you also care about what theyre saying. Youll be surprised how much respect and appreciation you gain just by asking questions. They dont pass judgmentIf you want to be likeable you must be open-minded. Being open-minded makes you approachable and interesting to others. No one wants to have a conversation with someone who has already formed an opinion and is not willing to listen.Having an open mind is crucial in the workplace where approachability means access to new ideas and help. To eliminate preconceived notions and judgment, you need to see the world through other peoples eyes. This doesnt require you believe what they believe or condone their behavior, it simply means you quit passing judgment long enough to truly understand what makes them tick. Only then can you let them be who they are. They dont seek attentionPeople are averse to those who are desperate for attention. You dont need to develop a big, extroverted personality to be likeable. Simply being friendly and considerate is all you need to win people over. When you speak in a friendly, confident, and concise manner, you will notice that people are much more attentive and persuadable than if you try to show them youre important. People catch on to your attitude quickly and are more attracted to the right attitude than what- or how many people- you know. When youre being given attention, such as when youre being recognized for an accomplishment, shift the focus to all the people who worked hard to help you get there. This may sound clich, but if its genuine, the fact that you pay attention to others and appreciate their help will show that youre appreciative and humble- two adjectives that are closely tied to likeability. They are consistentFew things make you more unlikeable than when youre all over the place. When people approach you, they like to know whom theyre dealing with and what sort of response they can expect. To be consistent you must be reliable, and you must ensure that even when your mood goes up and down it doesnt affect how you treat other people. They use positive body languageBecoming cognizant of your gestures, expressions, and tone of voice (and making certain theyre positive) will draw people to you like ants to a picnic. Using an enthusiastic tone, uncrossing your arms, maintaining eye contact, and leaning towards the person whos speaking are all forms of positive body language that high-EQ people use to draw others in. Positive body language can make all the difference in a conversation. Its true thathowyou say something can be more important thanwhatyou say. They leave a strong first impressionResearch shows most people decide whether or not they like you within the first seven seconds of meeting you. They then spend the rest of the conversation internally justifying their anfangsbuchstabe reaction. This may sound terrifying, but by knowing this you can take advantage of it to make huge gains in your likeability. First impressions are tied intimately to positive body language. Strong posture, a firm handshake, smiling, and opening your shoulders to the person you are talking to will help ensure that your first impression is a good one. They greet people by nameYour name is an essen tial part of your identity, and it feels terrific when people use it. Likeable people make certain they use others names every time they see them. You shouldnt use someones name only when you greet him. Research shows that people feel validated when the person theyre speaking with refers to them by name during a conversation. If youre great with faces but have trouble with names, have some fun with it and make remembering peoples names a brain exercise. When you meet someone, dont be afraid to ask her name a second time if you forget it right after you hear it. Youll need to keep her name taschentelefon if youre going to remember it the next time you see her. They smilePeople naturally (and unconsciously) mirror the body language of the person theyre talking to. If you want people to like you, smile at them during a conversation and they will unconsciously return the favor and feel good as a result. They know who to touch (and they touch them)When you touch someone during a conversatio n, you release oxytocin in their brain, a neurotransmitter that makes their brain associate you with trust and a slew of other positive feelings. A simple touch on the shoulder, a hug, or a friendly handshake is all it takes to release oxytocin. Of course, you have to touch the right person in the right way to release oxytocin, as unwanted or inappropriate touching has the opposite effect. Just remember, relationships are built not just from words, but also from general feelings about each other. Touching someone appropriately is a great way to show you care. They balance passion and funPeople gravitate toward those who are passionate. That said, its easy for passionate people to come across as too serious or uninterested because they tend to get absorbed in their work. Likeable people balance their passion with the ability to have fun. At work they are serious, yet friendly. They still get things done because they are socially effective in short amounts of time and they capitalize o n valuable social moments. They minimize small talk and gossip and instead focus on having meaningful interactions with their coworkers. They remember what you said to them yesterday or last week, which shows that youre just as important to them as their work.Bringing It All TogetherLikeable people are invaluable and unique. They network with ease, promote harmony in the workplace, bring out the best in everyone around them, and generally seem to have the most fun. Add these skills to your repertoire and watch your likeability soarTravis Bradberryis the co-author ofEmotional Intelligence 2.0,and the cofounder ofTalentSmart. This article first appeared at LinkedIn.You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of men tally strong people

This is how expressing gratitude can make you happier

This is how expressing gratitude can make you happierThis is how expressing gratitude can make you happierHappy Thanksgiving, bosses Todays a day I like to focus on giving thanks. Andnew researchfrom the Booth School of Business shows why this is one habit we should embrace more often.Researchers found that actuallyexpressingur gratitude not only boosts ur own well-being, but also makes a big impact onthose who youre thankful for. But more often than not in everyday life, we might feel it, but we dont always express it. Telling some one how much you appreciate them might seem clich or weird and over the top. But this research found that we underestimate how much our thanks is appreciated. We overestimate the awkwardAccording to thestudy, participants in three experiments wrote gratitude letters and then predicted how surprised, happy, and awkward recipients would feel. Recipients then reported how receiving an expression of gratitude actually made them feel. Expressers significantly un derestimated how surprised recipients would be about why expressers were grateful, overestimated how awkward recipients would feel, and underestimated how positive recipients would feel.Giving thanks islessawkward than we think its going to be.So this thanksgiving, I want you to actually say the words. Tell the people youre with why you appreciate them today. And pick up the phone or send the text to the people youre not with but who are on your mind.Make your day and theirs, too.Brad the Boo used to mention periodically someone from his past whod made a big impact on him. Its actually his ex-girlfriends father. He recommended to Brad that he read a book,Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, which is this coming of age novel I now recommend especially for young men navigating career change or big life changes. He got this recommendation at a key time in his life when he benefitted greatly from it.Now, a more anxious side of me used to feel a pang of insecurity whenever Id hear Brad talk about this guy in his life, as though thinking fondly about his ex-girlfriends dad was akin to him wanting to get back with her just for that relationship. Or Id take it as some personal affront about my dad. But when Id listen to Brad mention him from a place of security, confidence, and self-worth, I told him youve got to tell this guy about the impact he had on you. You cant go through life waxing poetic about people who made an impact on you without ever letting them know.So finally, he did. Years later. He emailed the guy this summer. And yes, he did mention that we were about to be married and inquired about his ex, which I thought was very sweet of him. He got a wonderfully warm response back and I know it made his day to hear from him. And it probably his exs dads day, too.Dont keep your gratitude a secretIts so important we dont go through life keeping what were most grateful for a secret. Whispering our joy doesnt keep us any safer from losing it.So this Thanksgi ving, I want to say from the bottom of my heart, Im grateful for you. Really. This work is not easy. Its been a long year. Making the leap into this independent production was terrifying. But you listeners were there to keep it real with me. And truly, to create with me. Your voicemails? They makethis showwhat it is a conversation, not a proclamation. Your boss moves give me life, and your willingness to share this show with your friends is the ultimate compliment. But most of all, when I read the reviews that have been coming in lately oniTunes,I appreciate the fact that you seem to hear how much of my heart goes into this work. I think you get what a personal endeavor this has been and really, when you care this much, and put your heart into your work, it feels vulnerable. So I appreciate all the ways in which youve responded to this show this year with your whole hearts, too.So thank you. Happy Thanksgiving. And keep bossinThis article was originally published on BossedUp.

After the Interview Checklist - What to Do Next

After the Interview Checklist - What to Do NextAfter the Interview Checklist - What to Do NextWe always get excited every time we find out that someone weve helped left an bewerbungsinterview feeling good about their chances of landing a job.The next question after they tell us the good news is, What do I do next? This is a very important question. Theyre really pumped up about the opportunity but they need to be careful. They need to reign in all that excitement so they dont bring the momentum to a halt sending an ill-timed thank you note or going completely silent will do just that. With that in mind, weve put together a checklist that you can refer to whenever you crush that interview and want to be smart about what comes nextEat a quick snackOkay, this might sound totally unrelated but you need to refuel after a long day of interviews. Take a break and reward yourself with a quick snack or your favorite dessertWrite it downWe know what youre thinking, here come the thank you note s But theres a few things to ponder first. Heres the thing, a simple Thank you for meeting with me message isnt going to make you stand out in a hiring managers mind. Before you start drafting a thank you note, write down a few precise details that were discussed with each interviewer. This will help refresh your memory and allow you to tailor a specific and thoughtful thank you message.Find the excitementNow come the thank you notes, right? Not yet. Remember to remind yourself why you got excited about the job you just interviewed for. Will it allow you to make a major career change? Is it the perfect company that youve always dreamed of working for? Find the reason that made you excited about the interview and use that as a guide to communicate that enthusiasm to the hiring manager. Be sure youre not coming off as too overexcited just let them know the gist of your enthusiasm.Write a thank you noteOkay, now its time to write thank you notes and send them out. If youre feeling over whelmed and think this is going to take a long time, dont feel this way. In all reality, it only takes about ten minutes.Follow upYou can do one of two things here Wait for the hiring manager to get back to you and completely stress out while you wait or you can be smart and take a mora proactive approach by following up in a timely manner. If a timeline is given, be sure to respect that timeline. If the timeline approaches and you still havent heard back, give them a 1-2 day buffer to still reach out to you. Plenty of hurdles come up, including administrative hold-ups or unexpected absences. If no timeline or sense of next steps is given upon exiting the interview, allow at least 4-5 business days (a week) before following up, as its likely that they are interviewing additional candidates and havent yet made a decision. Over-eagerness bordering on impatience will not do anything positive for your chances.Once youve checked everything off this list, get back to your job search becau se as exciting as this opportunity was, it might not materialize, so you need to keep plugging away until this offer or another one comes along.

What to do when you get fired lessons from our political leaders

What to do when you get fired lessons from our political leaders What to do when you get fired lessons from our political leadersPosted September 18, 2013, by Marni Williams Politicians have notoriously low job security, so if anyone knows how to get fired and move on, it should be them, right? Well, not always. For better or worse, lets binnensee what we can learn from our esteemed leaders of the past. Take a hint John Howard breezed from election to election in the early 2000s but in 2007 he not only lost the election in a landslide, he also lost his seat. Many say he should have known to step aside earlier. If the writing is on the wall then take notice and start to think about your next move having someone pry your fingers from the desk isnt a good look, but moving swiftly into another position that suits you better is. Dont burn bridges Im sure we all feel like writing a burning memoir or tweet, or email about our time in difficult jobs, but have you seen fruchtfleisch Lat ham lately? Become bitter and twisted and youre the only one who will come off badly. Play your cards right and lay the groundwork for an impressive comeback. Emerge quietly from the wreckage and you may just manage a Bob Carr and end up with a plum job with more travel expenses. Step out of the limelight for a moment Our personality-driven pop culture has a lot to answer for with the introduction of the political selfie. But the same goes for us nobodies ambiguous good riddance comments followed by status updates that say Look how good Im doing now smack of more attention-seeking than Kevin Rudd at his morning shave. And speaking of Rudd, hes got a few more lessons for the recently fired if things are awkward, maybe stay clear of industry functions for a while to give everyone some breathing space even if you claw back some allies, its likely to be as short-lived as the time it takes for them to realise they still work there and you dont. Take a break Whether youre a politician or a personal trainer, a job is such a large part of who we are. Take some time to hurt and adjust to your new surroundings. Dont go straight into job hunting if youre fuming. Make like Julia Gillard make one dignified speech and then retreat entirely, taking solace in family and friends. Which brings me to my next point Stay classy She may not have garnered a mention from Rudd or Abbott on election night, but Julia Gillard broke her silence for the first time to congratulate her old colleagues and even the gegenseite leader. Take the high road the view is better from there. Take advantage of honesty When heads are on the chopping block a small window of honesty opens up. There cant have been a more honest moment this election than when The Chasers Julian Morrow asked Anthony Albanese whether his appearance on their show was an admission that Labor was going to lose and the MP said, without hesitation, yes. If you are being given the flick, it cant hurt to ask for some candour an d revisit it later when you are in the mood for self-improvement. Know that its not always you If youve been caught in a downturn or change of leadership, then Steve Bracks knows how you feel. The former Labor premier was due to start his job as consul-general in New York this week and he is the first public servant to be caught in the collateral damage. You cant always change the situation around you, but you can fortify yourself for next time. If you get a redundancy then maybe think about investing in further study if you give yourself options then youre less likely to find yourself at the end of the dole queue. Dont be afraid to try new things Make like Bob Hawke and stay confident hes made tens of millions in business and horseracing, worked as a celebrity journalist and wrote his memoirs in 1994. Or maybe face up to the need for change former prime minister Gough Whitlam slowed the pace when he and his wife, Margaret, decided to leave public life to become European travel t our leaders. Keep a sense of humour Ok, he wasnt technically fired, but Jaymes Diaz made his best move yet when he went on The Chaser this week and said nothing at all. Theres nothing like laughing at your own shortcomings to put life in perspective and get you back on track. And if its too early to laugh, then at least you can be thankful that youre not a politician and no one is going to be writing about your failings tomorrow or in a few years time.Government ResourcesGovernment communications officer sample resumeGovernment communications officer sample cover letterCareer Insider StoriesNatasha Stott Despoja - Senator, South AustraliaInterested in becoming a?Management ConsultantHealth Information ManagerEnvironmental Health OfficerUrban PlannerRegional PlannerPopular Career Searcheshow to become an immigration officer in australiahow to become a Customs Officergovernment funded courses adelaidecertificate iv ranger in local governmentgovernment accredited courses in hypnotherap yGovernment CoursesBachelor of Cyber SecurityEnquire zugreifbar Enquire OnlineMaster of Cyber SecurityEnquire Online Enquire OnlineGraduate Certificate of Development and Humanitarian ActionEnquire Online Enquire OnlineDiploma of GovernmentEnquire Online Enquire OnlineMarni WilliamsRelated ArticlesBrowse moreRudd supports new employment initiative for Indigenous AustraliansThe federal government released information yesterday announcing its support for a new project to provide full-time employment for Indigenous Australians.CAREER ADVICEGovernment jobsNavy leadership program for womenIn an effort to improve opportunities for women in leadership roles in the Royal Australian Navy, the Australian Government is expanding its Navy Womens Leadership Program in 2010.Government jobsThe public sector a world of opportunityPeople have this idea that working in the public sector is all about boring jobs but it isnt. Combatting the CSI Effect

Combatting the CSI EffectCombatting the CSI EffectCrime dramas are fun, engaging and entertaining to watch, but is it possible that they cause more harm than good? The tremendous popularity of television shows like has gone a long way toward building interest in the field of forensic science and crime scene investigations, but there may be a downside the CSI effect The CSI Effect There is a concern among the forensic science and law enforcement communities that the technology and tactics presented in these shows have lead to unrealistic expectations about police capabilities among the public at large and, even worse, befhigung jurors. The CSI effect is a term applied to the increasingly pervasive idea that criminal cases can be wrapped up in an hour and that there is always incontrovertible proof of guilt available. The Reality of Crime Scene Investigations vs Television While its true that great advances have been made in the area of forensic science, its unrealistic to expe ct a crime scene to be processed, evidence analyzed and a conclusive forensics report to be completed before the detective or criminal investigator assigned to the case gets back to the office after leaving the scene. Unfortunately, though, that is what many victims expect, and what a lot of juries now look for. When they dont see it, defense attorneys often exploit the lack of DNA or other smoking gun evidence in an effort to make it appear as though law enforcement investigators didnt do their job. Usually, though, nothing could be further from the truth. Crime Scene Investigations TakeDays, Not Hours Instead, crime scene investigations and scene processing take hours, and sometimes days, if done correctly in order to avoid contamination. After the evidence is gathered, its usually brought to a secure temporary storage facility to be logged and tracked before it is sent to the appropriate laboratory. This process alone will usually take days, not hours, as meticulous records m ust be kept and strict rules of evidence must be followed. The idea that crime scene investigators collect evidence at a scene, bring it directly to a lab and either jump on a microscope to analyze it themselves or ask their lab tech buddy to do me a favor and get that to me by the end of the day simply doesnt happen. In fact, depending on the department or the crime, many forensic science technicians dont respond to the scene at all. Some very specialized technicians, such as bloodstain pattern analysts, may respond to the scene and collect their own evidence. fruchtwein forensic science technicians, though, analyze evidence collected by police detectives or police officers. The Waiting Game inCrime Scene Investigations Once the evidence makes its way to the lab, quite often it sits and waits some more. Crime laboratories across the country have huge backlogs. Most evidence will take a month or more to process. Some evidence, like DNA, can take a year or longer. The fact is, th ere are too many cases and not enough resources. When investigators place a rush request on evidence, they might get results back in a week or two, if they are lucky. Crime Scene Investigations AreNot Quite Picture Perfect CSI fans will also be disappointed to learn that there are no bells and whistles or alarms that go off when a forensic ballistics technician finds a match or a DNA profile is connected to a crime scene. No picture shows up on the computer screen, and no computer software exists to unequivocally declare that Colonel Mustard used the revolver in the study. Instead, after the analysis is completed, all thats displayed is a code or series of codes to be entered into another database to search for a match. Actual Input is Required forCrime Scene Investigations In the case of DNA and fingerprints, matches can only be located if there is already data on file. No comprehensive database exists containing the DNA profiles of everyone in the country. In fact, little more than 3 percent of the population has DNA profiles on file. The numbers of fingerprint records are significantly larger, but still nowhere near the numbers required to replicate the speed and efficiency of identifying suspects that is portrayed on television. Typically, in order to perform an analysis, investigators must already have a suspect in mind and request a DNA or fingerprint sample from him. This is sometimes easier said than done, because taking DNA is considered a seizure, with all of the Fourth Amendment protections that go with it. If a subject refuses to provide a sample, a search warrant will be required. Detectives Put the Pieces Together inCrime Scene Investigations Analyzing the evidence is one thing. Properly applying it is something else entirely. Contrary to popular belief and what has been portrayed on television, there is rarely a single smoking gun that proves guilt. Instead, cases are built and convictions won based on several pieces of evidence and testimony that come together to show guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. To do this, detectives must take the findings of forensic technicians and look at them as one piece of a much larger puzzle. The only thing DNA or fingerprints can really tell an investigator is that, at some point, a suspect was at the crime scene. This doesnt mean he committed the crime, or that he was even necessarily present at the time the crime was committed. Criminal Investigations Take Teamwork Solving crimes, especially complex ones, takes a tremendous amount of teamwork and patience. A proper and thorough investigation will often take months or longer before a suspect is identified and arrested, and years before they are tried and convicted. While this may appear to be a far more tedious process than what has been portrayed in popular culture, its necessary to ensure that justice is dispensed properly and fairly. If Crime Scene InvestigationWasnt Hard, It Wouldnt Be Fun This should in no way dimi nish the interest in a forensic science career or other criminology career, though. In fact, an argument could be made that if investigations were as easy as they appear on television, theyd be far less interesting and intellectually stimulating than they actually are.

What Do Corporate Recruiters Want We Asked Them

What Do Corporate Recruiters Want We Asked Them What Do Corporate Recruiters Want We Asked Them Job seekers face a buzzsaw of obstacles, locked doors, and unpleasant experiences in pursuit of a job offer. The first tests are typically issued by a corporate recruiter who serves as the gatekeeper between the job seeker and the hiring manager. To learn more about what job seekers are up against, we spoke with four corporate recruiters: Andrew, a recruiter for a wide range of positions in the non-profit industry James, a healthcare recruiter with over a decade of experience Jonathan, a technical recruiter for a Fortune 25 company Kevin, a technical recruiter for an international consulting firm What Does a Corporate Recruiter Do? “A lot of what we do is eliminating the busy work for the hiring manager,” said Andrew. “They want to see three-to-four candidates that match at least 75% of what theyre looking for, then they make the decision.” A corporate recruiter, also known as an in-house or internal recruiter, is the point person for a company’s job opening.  They are tasked with distributing the job posting, intaking applications and resumes, sourcing candidates, and narrowing the applicant pool. Corporate recruiters do not make the final hiring decision, but are tasked with delivering a handful of the most qualified candidates to the hiring manager. Corporate recruiters shouldn’t be confused with agency recruiters or headhunters,  who are only paid if the company hires their candidate. Corporate recruiters are on the same team as the hiring managers. As a result, they are less focused on their placement rate and more concerned with long-term fit and retention. “It’s a totally different mentality,” James told us. “Ive been working at this job for 10 years. Ive known these managers for years. Im looking for our long-term benefit.” How Corporate Recruiters Find Candidates When the hiring manager decides they need somebody, they open a requisition, said James. That goes through an approval process with management and signing off on all the budget stuff. Once all thats done it shifts to me. Developing the Job Description Corporate recruiters don’t typically write job descriptions but are often involved in the process. “I help with job descriptions sometimes,” said Jonathan. “Depending on the hiring manager, they might want to write their own job description.” Whether it’s to modify the job description or simply make sure everyone’s expectations are in sync, the recruiter starts off by talking everything over with the hiring manager. “Im the guy that takes our generic job description and asks the manager, ‘Does this adequately address what you want?’” James told us. “I coordinate with the manager to ask, ‘Are there specific details that we need to put here, specific skills or education to customize this for your specific need?’” Sometimes it’s the recruiter’s job to make sure the hiring manager isn’t asking for too much. “With hiring managers, they want to throw pretty much everything onto the ‘need to have’ side of things,” said Andrew. “Our job as recruiters is to help them take a step back and differentiate between the ‘need to have’ experience and the ‘nice to have’ experience. Because if you have a long list of need to have experience, its going to really complicate the recruiting process.” Once the job description is finalized, the recruiter is responsible for distributing the job posting to their job boards of choice Indeed, LinkedIn, Craigslist et al. How Corporate Recruiters Review a Resume Once the job description is finalized and posted, corporate recruiters field the incoming job applications and resumes. The response depends on the type of position, but some recruiters intake overwhelming numbers. “Some of our positions tend to have upwards of 200 applicants,” Andrew told us. How do corporate recruiters sift through to find the best candidates? Applicant Tracking System Searches and Filters Most large companies, including 98% of Fortune 500 companies, utilize an applicant tracking system, or ATS. This software has a variety of features that helps recruiters and human resources reps throughout the entire hiring process. The features most interesting to job seekers are the ones that allow applicants to be filtered, searched, and ranked. If an applicant submits their resume or job application through an online form, they’re interacting with an ATS. One of the ways corporate recruiters narrow down their applicant pool is by asking knockout questions  on the online application. “We set up our [ATS] with pre-screener questions,” said James. “When someone is applying on the website, those questions are screening for minimum qualifications for that job code. For example, if the minimum qualifications include a Bachelors Degree and 5 years of experience in this particular realm, there will be questions that speak to that to try and screen out people who dont meet those requirements.” Some ATS can also parse an applicant’s resume and make the text searchable for the recruiter. To filter down a high volume of applicants, the recruiter can simply search for keywords on the resume, such as hard skills or job titles. The best way to determine what a recruiter might search for is by analyzing the job description. “The first thing I’m looking for is the hard skills that match the job description,” Kevin told us. “Customizing your resume for applicant tracking systems and the software thats doing keyword searches, thats absolutely true in my industry, in any industry in general,” said James. “Thats very much how employers tend to do that.” What Corporate Recruiters Want to See on a Resume Some studies suggest that recruiters only spend an average of 6 seconds skimming a resume and determining a fit. Whether or not it’s that extreme, recruiters aren’t studying every resume top to bottom. “Initial assessment, maybe 15-25 seconds per resume,” said Andrew. “A lot of people don’t know how to write resumes to articulate what they actually do,” said Jonathan. So what do corporate recruiters want job seekers to do on their resumes? Include a Hard Skills Section “I would suggest people having a hard skills section,” advised Kevin. “When we reformat our internal resumes, skills and competencies are always at the top, right underneath the name, before you get into work experience.” It’s become increasingly popular to list skills near the top of the resume. The functional and hybrid resume formats are designed specifically for this purpose. Use Accomplishments to Demonstrate Skills Job seekers can’t rely on a skills list alone. Those skills lose their meaning when they’re not backed up by context and accomplishments. “If I’m looking at a resume, the ideal person for me, they’re gonna have, ‘Here’s the hard skills that I have,’” described Jonathan. “Then from there, ‘Here’s my current job. Here’s a project I worked on and what that accomplished. Here’s the problem and here’s how I solved it.’ He continued: Breaking it down to, ‘Here’s my contribution to this company, what I did.’ That is the best kind of resume to me because it gives me a really quick, ‘OK, here’s how you used [a skill]. This is what you accomplished.’” If an important skill is listed, it should be made abundantly clear how and where that skill was utilized and developed. Evidence is required. Excerpt from a resume example with a skills list under each position. This applies to both hard and soft skills. “Im not too turned on by candidates who put things like ‘hard working,’ ‘dedicated,’ things like that [on their resume],” said Andrew. “There are so many things that you can say about yourself, but how is that demonstrated? If you put down something like, ‘Havent missed more than three days in a year,’ thats solid numbers, something thats more tangible.” Prove That Your Experience Meets Requirements Experience level is among the minimum qualifications in most job listings. Job seekers that clearly demonstrate that they have enough quality experience will stand out among applicants. “Id say 80% of the people aren’t what we’re looking for,” said Jonathan. “They’re just applying online.” He continued: “The first thing that I look at is how long have they been doing what they’ve been doing.” “I want to see the progression of not only what job title and what company you were working for, but also a snapshot of the progression of your career,” said James. “I also look at the types of companies they worked with,” said Jonathan. “Is it a small two-man shop? For us they’ll work for a large enterprise applications, so do they have that kind of experience, [working] on a large team of 10, 20, 30, 40 people?” Resume Formatting Matters It’s not just about key skills and impressive experience. Not only can formatting cause problems in an ATS, recruiters draw conclusions from the way your resume is laid out. “Im not just looking for the content of it, Im looking for how you format the information,” said James. “Im looking at the logical flow of it, how you categorize the information, how does it read. The quality of presentation tells me something about you.” He concluded: “If you did a sloppy resume, youre losing points already before Ive even called you. If I even call.” It’s not just the design. Consistent formatting can make the difference. “Say their last position they were there from ‘10/12/2010 until 11/1/2017’ but in the previous company the person said from ‘November 2, 2008 until January 3, 2009,’ described Andrew. Thats misformatted in the way the dates are conveyed. I know thats a very nitpicky thing, but Ive had candidates not move forward in the process because of something like that.” Dont Use a Resume Template with a Photo Job seekers should also be wary of resume formats that include their headshot. “I’m not the biggest fan of pictures on resumes,” said Kevin. “That kind of drives me nuts and immediately opens the door to recruiter discrimination, which is obviously something everyone is trying to avoid.” To keep themselves above claims of discrimination, some recruiters automatically reject any resume that includes the applicant’s photograph. Using your headshot on a resume could trigger an automatic rejection. (Google Image Search screenshot) How Corporate Recruiters Source Passive Candidates Corporate recruiters also look beyond their incoming job applications to fill roles. Reaching out to candidates that aren’t directly applying is known as sourcing. Job seekers can improve their chances by supporting these efforts. Put Your Resume on Career Sites Sourcing often starts with browsing resumes posted by job seekers to a variety of job boards. This includes the big name career sites such as Indeed, Monster, Glassdoor,  CareerBuilder and others. There are also niche sites that cater to specific industries. For example, in healthcare, James checks out  NatureJobs. In tech, Jonathan and Kevin browse sites like Dice, GitHub, and Stack Overflow. “Stack Overflow works really great because you can see their skills, you can see questions that they’ve asked [to the Stack Overflow community], how active they are, if they’re an active or passive candidate, things like that,” said Jonathan. “It’s a great tool.” Optimize for LinkedIn Recruitment 87% of recruiters use LinkedIn to source or vet job candidates. “We use a lot of LinkedIn Recruiter,” said Kevin. “That’s probably the main tool I use.” Recruiters use LinkedIn Search to find candidates that have the right job title or hard skills for the open position. They can return a combination of skills and titles in one search by crafting a complex Boolean string. A Boolean search contains “and,” “or,” and “not” operators and other modifiers that help return very specific results. For example, a very simple Boolean search would be “Web AND Developer.” This search only returns LinkedIn profiles that have both of those terms. “I’m taking the hard skills that are listed in the job description and doing some sort of Boolean search with them [on LinkedIn],” said Kevin. Search results for the Boolean search Web AND Developer in LinkedIn Recruiter. The searches can become very complex. “I had a coworker who would send me these 20- or 30-line-long Boolean searches,” said Kevin. Here’s an example of a long and complicated Boolean search string for a User Interface Designer position: (UI Design OR UI Designer OR User Interface Design OR User Interface Designer OR user interaction design OR user interaction designer OR human computer interaction OR HCI OR UI/UX Design OR UI/UX Designer OR UX Designer OR UX Designer OR user experience design OR user experience designer OR interaction design OR interface design OR interaction strategy) AND mobile AND (consumer facing OR consumer-facing) AND NOT director AND NOT manager Adding  keywords from actual job descriptions to their LinkedIn profiles helps job seekers appear in more recruiter search results. Interviewing with a Recruiter Once a corporate recruiter has identified candidates they’d like to learn more about, the next step is to schedule a quick phone call known as a phone screen. Be Engaging in the Phone Screening “Thats going to be a phone interview, maybe take about 20-30 minutes at the most,” said James. “If I come across an individual whose resume is a very strong match, my first thing is to call that individual so that we can have a 20-30 minute conversation where he can take me through the resume,” Andrew told us. The phone screen serves a few purposes. To start, it gives the recruiter their first good opportunity to gauge the candidates verbal communication. “You want to know how good they are conveying their past experience to someone that theyve never met,” continued Andrew. “So in that initial conversation, Im gauging what their communication skills are like.” “If someone can’t really hold a conversation on the phone they’re probably not going to move forward in the interview process,” said Kevin. “If you get someone on the phone and they’re super monotone and they don’t have a lot of enthusiasm, you’re just like, This is a high energy place. If you’re not at least able to be excited about what I’m telling you, it’s not gonna work out,’” said Jonathan. Corporate recruiters use a short phone screening to gauge communication skills, dig into the resume, and start determining culture fit. Make Sure Your Resume Adds Up The second thing recruiters are doing during the phone screen is vetting the resume. “As Im having this conversation I’m looking for discrepancies, because people are oftentimes not real honest in job interviews because theyre trying to sell themselves,” said James. “Im looking for your story to make sense.” “A lot of individuals dont like making their resume longer than 2 pages,” said Andrew. “I always recommend trying to squeeze it into one. But when you have that limited amount of real estate, there are going to be some things that you have to leave out. … [In a phone screen] youre trying to really mine out each position individually so youre able to answer any sort of question that a hiring manager may have about that individual.” Get Excited About the Company Aside from logistics and other specifics that need to be addressed, the third goal of the phone screen is to sell the candidate on the company and get an idea of culture fit. “I tell them about our company, tell them about what we do, why it’s a great place to work,” said Jonathan. “Kind of be that sales guy to get them excited about the position.” “One of the questions that I do try to ask everyone is what the culture at their old jobs were and what they liked and didn’t like and compare it to what ours is,” said Kevin. Depending on the company and position, a corporate recruiter might opt to bring in a candidate for an in-person interview. That said, the phone screen is typically the only interview the recruiter will conduct with a candidate. After a successful phone screen, the recruiter will assemble a report featuring their notes and the candidate’s resume and send it to the hiring manager for review. An in-person interview will typically be with the hiring manager. In some organizations, the corporate recruiter may come back around after a successful in-person interview to present the offer, negotiate salary, and tackle other logistics. How to Impress a Corporate Recruiter Job seekers focus a lot of attention on the hiring managers. They tailor their resume to the hiring manager’s job description. They personalize their cover letter for the hiring manager. They prep for common in-person interview questions. But impressing the corporate recruiter is the first step. Without an OK from the recruiter, the hiring manager is completely unaware of most applicants. To recap, in order to make a good impression with a corporate recruiter, job seekers should do the following: Meet the minimum qualifications Validate listed skills with examples and accomplishments Exhibit an attention to detail on the resume Presentation matters Include optimized keywords on their resume and LinkedIn profile Be prepared to talk about themselves on the phone (enthusiastically!)

How to Provide Effective New Employee Orientation

How to Provide Effective New Employee Orientation How to Provide Effective New Employee Orientation Orienting employees to their workplaces and their jobs is one of the most neglected functions in many organizations. An employee handbook and piles of paperwork are not sufficient anymore when it comes to welcoming a new employee to your organization. The most frequent complaints about new employee orientation are that it is overwhelming, boring, or that the new employee is left to sink or swim. Employees feel as if the organization dumped too much information on them which they were supposed to understand and implement in much too short of a time period. The result is often a confused new employee who is not as productive as he could be. He is also more likely to leave the organization within a year. It is costly to both the employer and the employee. Multiply this by the number of employees that you hire each year, and the cost of turnover becomes significant. With an ongoing labor crunch, developing an effective employee orientation experience continues to be crucial. It is critical that new hire programs are carefully planned to educate the employee about the organizations  values  and history and about who is who in the organization. A well thought out orientation program, whether it lasts one day or six months, will help not only in the retention of employees  but also in the increases in employee productivity. Organizations that have good orientation programs get new people up to speed faster, have better alignment between what the employees do and what the organization needs them to do, and have lower turnover rates. Purposes of Orientation Employers have to realize that orientation isnt just a nice gesture put on by the organization. It serves as an important element of the new employee welcome and organization integration. To Reduce Startup CostsProper orientation can help the employee get up to speed much more quickly, thereby reducing the costs associated with learning the job. To Reduce AnxietyAny employee, when put into a new, strange situation, will experience anxiety that can impede his or her ability to learn to do the job. Proper orientation helps to reduce anxiety that results from entering into an unknown situation  and helps provide guidelines for behavior and conduct, so the employee doesnt have to experience the stress of guessing. To Reduce Employee TurnoverEmployee turnover increases as employees feel they are not valued  or are put in positions where they cant possibly do their jobs. Orientation shows that the organization values the employee, and helps provide the tools necessary for succeeding in the job. To Save Time for the SupervisorSimply put, the better the initial orientation, the less likely that supervisors and coworkers will have to spend time teaching the employee. You can effectively and efficiently cover all of the things about the company, the departments, the work environment, and the culture during orientation. The manager and coworkers will then need only to reinforce these concepts.   To Develop Realistic Job Expectations, Positive Attitudes, and Job SatisfactionIt is important that employees learn as soon as possible what is expected of them, and what to expect from others, in addition to learning about the values and attitudes of the organization. While people can learn from experience, they will make many mistakes that are unnecessary and potentially damaging. The main reasons orientation programs fail: The program was not planned; the employee was unaware of the job requirements; the employee does not feel welcome. Employee orientation is important- orientation provides a lot of benefits, and you can use feedback from participating employees to make your orientations even better. All new employees should complete a  new employee orientation program  that is designed to assist them in adjusting to their jobs and work environment and to instill a positive work attitude and motivation at the onset. A thoughtful new employee orientation program can reduce turnover and save an organization thousands of dollars. One reason people change jobs is that they never feel welcome or part of the organization they join. What Do You Need to Include in the Process? The most important principle to convey during orientation is your commitment to continuous improvement  and continual learning. That way, new employees become comfortable with asking questions to obtain the information that they need to learn, problem solve and make decisions. A well-thought-out orientation process takes energy, time and commitment. However, it usually pays off for the individual employee, the department, and the organization. One such example is Mecklenburg Countys (North Carolina) success in revamping its  employee orientation program. The employer wanted to live up to its credo of  employees being the organizations greatest resource. In 1996, as part of a larger initiative to redesign services to meet customer needs, the Mecklenburg County Human Resources Department staff made a smart decision. They viewed new employees as part of their customer base and asked their customers what they wanted. Employees were asked what they  wanted and needed from orientation. They were also asked what they liked and didnt like about orientation. New employees were asked what they wanted to know about the organization. Additionally, the organizations senior managers were asked what they believed was important for employees to learn when joining the county payroll. Using feedback collected from employees, Mecklenburgs HR training staff first realized that meeting employees needs required more than a half day training session. Trusting employee feedback,  the trainers crafted a one-day orientation that gave employees what they said they wanted and what senior management believed employees needed to know. Essentially, the orientation mix now includes the less exciting topics such as W-2s and various policies and procedures, but it also includes details that let the employee know something about the organization. Need more on how to plan an employee orientation thats beneficial and fun? Key Planning Questions Human Resource professionals and line managers first need to consider key new employee orientation planning questions before implementing or revamping a current program. These are the key questions to ask. What things do new employees need to know about this work environment that would make them more comfortable? What impression and impact do you want to have on a new employees first day? What key policies and procedures must employees be aware of on the first day to avoid mistakes on the second day? Concentrate on vital issues. What special things (desk, work area, equipment, special instructions) can you provide to make new employees feel comfortable, welcome and secure? What positive experience can you provide for the new employee that she could discuss with her family at the end of the first day of work? The experience should be something to make the new employee feel valued by the organization. How can you help the new employees supervisor be available to the new employee on the first day to provide personal attention and to convey a clear message that the new employee is an important addition to the work team? How to Put Your Best Foot Forward for a New Employee Since first impressions are crucial, here are some tips for putting your best foot forward.  Have some fun. Concentrate only on the very important topics of the handbook. Play some games- this can help people learn.  Games include: Photo Match:  after the tour. Each employee is provided photos of other employees and a list of names. The object is to match the name with the face. Signature Hunt:  While employees are touring the facility, provide them with a piece of paper with the names of several associates they will be meeting. They are then asked to obtain the signatures of the people they meet. The employee who obtains the most signatures from a variety of new coworkers gets a prize. Other games that pertain to what the employee learned during orientation are also effective assurances that orientation is successful. Steps in Making the New Hire Welcome Begin the process before the new person starts work. Send an  agenda  to the new associate with the offer letter so that the employee knows what to expect. Stay in touch after he or she has accepted the position to answer questions. Make sure the new persons work area is ready for the first day of work.Make sure that key coworkers know the employee is starting and encourage them to come to say hello before orientation begins. A  new employee welcome letter with an agenda  allows coworkers to stay in touch with the new employee and her schedule. Assign a mentor  or buddy, to show the new person around, make introductions, and start training. Let the mentor have sufficient notice so that they can make preparations. The  mentoring relationship should continue  for 90 days and may continue much longer if the pair makes a great connection. Many relationships go on for years and may even  turn into a sponsorship.Start with the basics. People become productive sooner if they are firmly grounded in the basic knowledge they need to understand their job. Focus on the why, when, where, and how of the position before expecting them to handle assignments or big projects. Dont overwhelm them with too much information. Provide samples about how to complete forms and the persons job description with the orientation packet.Have some fun. Concentrate only on the very important topics of the handbook. Play some games- this can help people learn.Provide a list of FAQs with a contact person, and phone number or extension.Plan to take the new employee to lunch, or ask others to join the new employee in the lunchroom or in a conference room with other members of the department. The first day on the job is not the day to leave the new employee alone during lunch. This is a good time for the supervisor to take the employee to lunch, include other coworkers, and make sure the employee is at ease. Its also an excellent environment in which employees can get to know each other and the new coworker.Keep the new persons family in mind. A new job means an  adjustment for the entire family, especially if they have relocated. Do what you can to ease the transition and help them feel comfortable in the community.Ask for feedback. Find out from former new hires how they perceived the orientation process, and dont be afraid to make changes based on those recommendations. You can send an evaluation two to four weeks after the employee has started, and ask: Now that you have been with the company awhile did the new employee orientation meet your needs? After the employee has worked for you for a while, and he finds out what he should have learned but did not at the orientation. At Mecklenburg County, after their redesign process, one of the trainers, Allyso n Birbiglia  said, We recognize that we have to continuously improve orientation to meet the changing needs of our customers. What works now may not serve our employees well next month or next year. An effective orientation program- or the lack of one- will make a significant difference in how quickly a new employee becomes productive and has other long-term impacts on your organization. The end of the first day, the end of the first week, the end of each day in your employment, is just as important as the beginning. Help your employees feel that you want them to come back the next day, and the next, and the next. Dr. Judith Brown is a Program Manager for Policy and Performance Management at Naval Intelligence.

Popular Content in Industry Publications

Popular Content in Industry Publications Popular Content in Industry Publications A trade publication is a term for a specific kind of publication - usually a magazine, journal or newspaper - that is geared to people who work in a specific business or industry. Unlike a consumer publication, a trade publication covers a specific topic for people who work in that particular field or industry and therefore cover an industry in more minute details than a consumer publication might. The idea is that trade publications deliver information thats of value to those who work in a certain field, but might not be of as much interest to the general public. Trade magazines are often exclusive as they are not sold at retail chains and are usually circulated to an elite class of subscribers and members interested in the publications particular industry. For example, someone who likes movies might read a consumer publication like Entertainment Weekly because it covers entertainment. But someone who works in the movie industry will probably be reading publications like Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, two trades that cover deals and other things happening in Hollywood more closely. Popular Content In general, a trade publication will include articles that try to entertain the reader, sell a product (their own or their advertisers), or promote a particular viewpoint. People consider trade magazines to be where they go to talk shop, see whos who, learn whos new, and find out whats new. Readers will often find information about: current trends, issues, and eventsnewsuseful products to use or sell, for that professionpractical adviceads of interest to people in that profession Most articles found in trade publication are not particularly long - 2-3 pages in length is the norm - and since they are written for the professionals in the field they dont offer explanations of basic concepts as they assume the reader knows the basic concepts of the industry. Some of the most popular types of articles featured in trade magazines include: Interviews with successful industry leaders. These types of articles allow readers to learn who did what, when, how, and why from others in their industry, and get ideas that they can then apply to their own business ventures.Frequently Asked Questions and customer inquiries. Readers want to also learn about the best and most efficient way to do what needs to be done, as fast as possible, for their customers. These types of articles help teach better customer service and lead to more sales down the road for the reader. List articles. Articles written in a list format are always reader favorites. Whether it be the top 10 ways to sell a particular item, to a list of must-have products, lists can pack a lot of punch in a small article. Trade publications are often written in the language of the profession, by business or industry representatives and sometimes even by freelance writers. Aside from citing industry sources, it can often be very difficult to tell who wrote the articles as some trade publication articles are anonymously written.

How to Write a Thank You Note to a Customer

How to Write a Thank You Note to a Customer How to Write a Thank You Note to a Customer Saying “thank you” is incredibly important in sales because the first thing you must sell is yourself. You cant sell your product or  service until youve demonstrated that you are someone the prospect wants to do business with. Thank-You Shows Your Good Style The age-old adage, good manners never goes out of style, is more than an adage, its a universal truth. Sending thank-you notes can have a huge impact on how others think of you because it shows that you not only appreciated what that person did, you also took the time to tell them so. A thank you note doesnt have to be elaborate or written on pricey letterpress paper. Usually, two or three sentences is  good enough and can be sent electronically or, even more thoughtfully, sent by mail, which will especially make it stand out. NFL star Kirk Cousins advice for Michigan State graduates is so simple but brilliant

NFL star Kirk Cousins advice for Michigan State graduates is so simple but brilliant NFL star Kirk Cousins advice for Michigan State graduates is so simple but brilliant NFL quarterback Kirk Cousins offered some sound advice for Michigan State graduates earlier this month. The Minnesota Vikings star, who graduated MSU in 2011, drew upon both his experience as a Spartan and in the NFL to pass down life lessons to the 7,947 who were about to enter the workforce.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!He told graduates to focus on four and one-half truths he picked up while he was at Michigan State.“Remember as you move forward, it’s who, not what, that counts the most,” Cousins said near the end of his address. “Don’t just deliver, over deliver; see life through a window, not a mirror; and choose to be a great decision maker. Do those four things, while enjoying the journey along the way, and if my life is any example, you’ll have plenty of good days ahead.”The 30-year-old knows a thing or two about perseverance. He reminded students tha t he spent two of his four-and-a-half years at Michigan State as a backup quarterback before sitting on the bench for the first three of his seven NFL seasons. He signed a monster $84 million deal with Minnesota last year.Below (Thanks to Peter King’s Football Morning in America column) are those lessons Cousins’ preached:“The first truth that I learned at MSU is that it is who, not what, that will count the most for you. For the past four years, it’s likely you have been focused on what - what career will I choose, what will I major in. I can tell you that it will be more important who you do life with than what you do. You see, a great job done alongside people you don’t enjoy becomes less than a great job. Conversely, a rough job done alongside people you enjoy can become a great job … What I do is a dream come true. But the truth is, while some football seasons have been very enjoyable, others have been a grind. The what remained the same. The who I played with made the difference. “The second truth: In order to succeed, you can’t just deliver; you must over-deliver. Unless you run your own company, chances are you’ll start somewhere near the bottom. In the football world, that’s called being a backup. For two of four-and-a-half years at MSU and three of seven years in the NFL, my primary position on gamedays was called the bench. While I was spending time on the bench at Michigan State, I had a coach named Don Treadwell, who said, ‘Kirk, go out every day focused on playing so well in practice that the coaches can’t wait to put you on the field in a real game.’ While you’re a backup, prepare and lead like you’re the starter … Every day, work like you’re the company president, and one day, you may be the company president. “The third truth: See life through a window, not a mirror. There are two kinds of people in life- mirror people and window people. Most, by a wide margin, are mirror people. We travel through life, focused on ourselves, thinking, ‘What about me?’ Window people measure success by the contribution they make to the lives of others. In August of 2007, I had my very first practice at Michigan State. It did not go well. I couldn’t spit out the plays, I couldn’t get the snap count right, I missed reads. Walking off the field that day, I was considering transferring to the small Division III school in my hometown, as that felt more like where I belonged. At that moment, a team leader named Justin Kershaw walked up behind me, put his arm around me and said, ‘Kirk- how do you think practice went for you?’ ‘Not well, Justin,’ I replied. He said, ‘You may not know the plays yet, but those of us on defense can see that you have ability. Just keep working and it will come. We a ll struggled on our first day here.’ And just like that, my entire perspective on my future at Michigan State had changed- all because an upperclassman had stopped thinking about himself for five seconds and put his arm around a meaningless freshman … I challenge you to look at life through a window, to be a blessing to the people whose paths you cross. “The fourth truth: Life becomes a reflection of the decisions we make. On my recruiting visit here, my future quarterback coach, Dave Warner, said something that stuck with me for the rest of my career and has been the foundation of my success on the football field: ‘Kirk, if you make good decisions with the football in your hand, everything else takes care of itself. If you make bad decisions with the football in your hand, no other trait really matters.’ While true in quarterbacking, it’s more true in the game of life. The Bible puts it this way, in Galatians 6:7. Whatever a person sows, this also they shall reap. It’s not just the big decisions, like who you marry. It’s the everyday decisions, like how you care for your health. The bottom line: make enough good decisions, and chances are things will turn out just fine. “Let me give half a thought for that extra half-year I spent earning my degree. Through it all, enjoy the journey. You can prepare for the future today, but you can’t live the future today. If your joy in life is always tied to a future experience, you will never know true joy … To quote The Office, a show I watched in my years here, Andy Bernard says in the final minute of the final episode, ‘I wish there was a way you know you’re in the good old days before you’ve actually left them.’ “ “Do those four things, while enjoying the journey along the way, and if my life is any example, you’ll have plenty of good days ahead. Maybe even good enough to shout at someone, ‘YOU LIKE THAT!’ “Watch the full speech in the video below. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

How Much to Put in a Flexible Spending Account (FSA)

How Much to Put in a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) How Much to Put in a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) Flexible spending accounts are a great way to pay for your healthcare costs. The money is taken out of pretax dollars, so it lowers your tax liability when you take advantage of the account. However, if you do not use the money you set aside by the end of the year, you will lose it, so it is important to decide how much you want to contribute each year carefully. This amount can be changed during open enrollment. It is important to carefully review all of the changes that are made to your benefits during open enrollment each year. Consider Both Childcare and Health Spending You can have a flexible spending account (FSA) that covers healthcare costs, but many companies also offer them for childcare costs, as well. You will need to determine what the maximum amount that you can contribute and then consider if you will use that much this year. Generally, you will use at least that much for childcare costs, but you may not for healthcare costs. You should check with human resources as to the process of paying for childcare, which may be slightly different from how you get reimbursed for healthcare costs. Determine How Much You Spent Last Year Look over the last year and determine how much you spent on out-of-pocket costs for medical items. It includes copayments, deductibles, and prescriptions. It can also  cover  dental  and eye care. Then determine if this is a typical amount that you expect to spend the next year. For example, if you had your gallbladder removed last year, you will not need it removed again this year and can lower your costs. Conversely, you should also consider if you have anything planned that would increase your medical costs such as a planned surgery or pregnancy. The resulting amount should be the amount that you have deducted over the year. As you do this, be sure you take into account any increase in your co-payments or deductibles for the year. It will affect how much you spend. If your  health insurance plan is changing, you will need to take that into account as you consider how much you need to have withheld. If your childcare costs are changing, you will need to take this into account. For example, the costs may decrease if you have a child starting school in the next year, and you no longer need childcare. You cannot receive a refund on the money that you have deducted to cover this expense, so it is often better to estimate low so that you do not lose the money completely. Submit Your Receipts to Human Resources When you pay for your medical expense, you will submit the receipts to your human resources department, and then they will reimburse you the amount that you paid out of pocket. Your company may have guidelines on how often you can submit each month or a cut off time to receive the check for the month. Be sure to follow their policies to receive prompt payment. Some companies have begun using debits cards that allow you to pay for the co-payments or medical expenses with the debit card. You can use your entire balance up at the beginning of the year, even if you have not contributed at all. It is important to track your spending, and stop using your debit card once you have reached the limit. Use Up Any Remaining Funds at the End of the Year At the end of the year, you should check to see if you have any money leftover. If you do, you should find ways to use it. It may be that you get the medical test you have been putting off done, or you can purchase a very nice set of glasses with the money that you have left. You can also purchase over the counter medication with these funds. Check with your human resources department to be sure that the expenses qualify if you are trying to use up the last little bit of your money. Some people confuse a flexible spending account with a health savings account. It is important to understand the difference between the two. If you have a high deductible insurance policy, you will likely have the health savings account and money in that can roll over each year.

3 Reasons To Never Use a Functional Resume Format

3 Reasons To Never Use a Functional Resume Format 3 Reasons To Never Use a Functional Resume Format One of the most common questions we receive here at ResumeSpice is, “Does format really matter?” It’s been well established that recruiters don’t spend a lot of time screening resumes. So it’s crucial to keep their attention and it begins with the correct format. We don’t want you to lose out on your dream job due to resume formatting, so we’re here to tell you one format you should never use. It’s called the functional resume. This format is designed to highlight your achievements under a skill set rather than a chronological order of date and place of employment. Recruiters and employers who see functional resumes immediately become disengaged or, even worse, look over the resume altogether. Simply, a functional resume should never be used and this is why. 6 Seconds of Comprehension We’ve mentioned in a previous blog that you may get around six seconds of a recruiters’ time when they pull up your resume. That’s a very short period to decide if a candidate should move forward or be taken out of the running for a potential position. A functional resume hinders recruiters from understanding your career path timeline or the details. Functional resumes require digging and recruiters do not have enough time to connect your skills to your job history. Stick to a format that always places your skills and achievements next to your company and tenure. Hiding Information Hiring managers and recruiters carry suspicions of any resume with a functional style. They have a good reason; the vast majority of job seekers who utilize this resume format are doing so in order to hide something. And recruiters know it. Oftentimes the candidate has the best intention when trying not to display a job gap or a string of short-held positions. However, a functional resume only highlights those pieces of information. Reverse chronological order is best at highlighting that you’ve moved forward despite the bumps. Unclear It may seem like your skill set is lost amongst your job history but it’s actually not. When you provide context by showing where, when, and how you accomplished an achievement or mastered a skill, it speaks to the employer.   Functional resumes, simply put, make poor story-tellers. They give no context for an accomplishment or skill. Remember, how you did it holds just as much merit as what you did. That’s why it is not ideal to separate what you achieved from your place of employment. If a functional resume isn’t a solution, then what can you do? If you have resume gaps or perhaps a time period you weren’t thrilled about in your career, I suggest reading How to Handle a Career Gap on Your Resume. You can also utilize a chronological format which will display your most current position and allow recruiters to effectively review your resume. Supercharge your day with these 4 productivity hacks

Supercharge your day with these 4 productivity hacks Supercharge your day with these 4 productivity hacks We are all busy - life, work - it never ends. But, it seems like some people have it together and can get stuff done in less time. How do they manage everything, while others just get by in an endless cycle of work? It’s quite easy. Entrepreneurs who are efficient have a system, and they stick to it.  At the end of the day, you are in control of your to-do list, not the other way around.  You can also become super productive by following the four simple, yet powerful hacks below that can transform your schedule.1. Establish an email checking and replying protocolIt can be second nature to check your email first thing when you wake up, and even before you go to bed. But when it comes to efficiency, this is not the way to go.I get hundreds of emails throughout each day, whether I’m in a meeting, driving or talking on the phone. I realized: Why should I let these interruptions take me away from what I’m doing? To get your time back, check your email only when you can reply to them .  This means that unless you have the time to actually respond to the messages you receive, don’t bother checking them, because then all you’re doing is compounding the amount of time it takes to deal with those messages.  This way, you’re  batching up your email  tasks in a way that prevents you from being pulled away from tasks every time a notification comes.2. Outsource smaller non-essential tasksNot all to-do lists are the same. And not all tasks are either. The thing about being productive is not just about getting things done; it is more about getting the  right  stuff done.Take a good hard look at your tasks and don’t just prioritize them. Give them a value of importance. My favorite tool for this is Asana. It’s an amazing project management software that allows me to not only keep track of my tasks but offload work or parts of a task to others, while at the same time not having to worry about someone dropping the ball.If it’s not urgent,  offload the task  to s omeone else on your team, or work with an outsourcer to get them done.3. Do one task at a timeMultitasking has been engrained in us to give ourselves a sense of accomplishment and status.  The problem is, though, that people who multitask don’t end up far ahead, and instead feel more stress and anxiety.  That’s because, by multitasking, you diminish your ability to focus on one thing for an extended period of time. As a result, all you are doing is prolonging the amount of time some tasks are going to take to complete.I am guilty of doing this myself. For years I would try to take on 50 things at once thinking I could do it all - that this was my work ethic and I didn’t think it could be any other way.  However, I’ve forced myself over the years to  stay focused  and wrap up one task at a time before I moved onto the next task. Since then, the quality of my work has improved, as well as the time it takes to do things.4. Get the worm by being an early birdBy doing a bit of e xercise, having a hearty breakfast, taking a shower and reading a book, you could have done more by 7:00 a.m. than most people who have not even gotten out of bed yet.The thing I do  is cycle - I absolutely love it. It gives me that boost of energy for the day. And, early mornings are perfect to focus on things I need to get done because my family is still asleep, which allows me to be as productive as possible.Mornings give you the opportunity to start fresh and energized to tackle anything on your plate.  To add, before you go to bed the night before, have your next day planned out. That way, as soon as you wake up, you already have an action plan laid out, so you are not up wondering what to do next.Being an entrepreneur isn’t easy.  But if you manage your time, energy and priorities, there is nothing you can’t accomplish, and your business growth will be just around the corner.Arash Asli is a co-founder and CEO of  Yocale.com, an online scheduling and marketing platform fo r small businesses.
