What to Do When You Put Your Foot in Your Mouth at Work
What to Do When You Put Your Foot in Your Mouth at Work What to Do When You Put Your Foot in Your Mouth at Work Wouldnt it be extraordinary in the event that you could denounce something you said when you understood it irritated somebody? Suppose you had something like the erase button on a PC console however as opposed to eradicating words you just composed, you could delete words you said. Lamentably there isnt such an instrument. At the point when you put your foot in your mouth and outrage somebody, for instance a collaborator, there is nothing you can do to cause your words to vanish. The majority of us understand the significance of keeping up great working environment connections and dont make statements with the aim of culpable our collaborators. Generally we just dont understand the impact our words will have until its too late. Sometimes we talk without setting aside the effort to contemplate what we are going to state since we are caught up with speculation about or doing different things. Frequently, however, we do consider what we are going to state yet dont believe that it will be hostile. It happens to everybody and it has presumably transpired. Possibly you said something jokingly that a collaborator didnt believe was interesting, raised a subject that was improper for the work environment or scrutinized his work too brutally. Just when you see the demeanor all over, do you understand youve offended him. As much as you need to reclaim your words, you cant. What would you be able to do? You have two or three alternatives. You can overlook what occurred and trust your associate will forgive and never look back. That may work, yet almost certain you will keep on thinking about whether things are really back to ordinary with your relationship. The other alternative and the most ideal approach to push ahead is to manage it promptly or when you know theres an issue. Here are things you can do that will, ideally, fix the issue or if nothing else shield it from deteriorating. State Youre Sorry: Apologize the second you understand what occurred. Regardless of whether everything you can figure out how to do is express Im sorry that is far superior to letting the words that outraged your associate linger palpably. The more you pause, the more terrible things could get. Your associate may think you dont care that she was annoyed. The most significant thing is that you let her realize you do, whether or not you concur that she ought to have been.Dont Be Defensive: You may not comprehend why your colleague has disliked what you said. For instance, you may have made him a wisecrack that was generally welcomed by others, yet your office mates face turned red when he heard it. Should the way that others didnt respond a similar way by one way or another invalidate his response? No, it shouldnt. What is important is just that he was annoyed and that is the thing that you should apologize for. All you have to state is Im sorry for making a wisecrack that irritated yo u. Release It: After you offer your statement of regret, proceed onward. There is no compelling reason to harp on what occurred. Doing that will just keep on helping your collaborator to remember your offense, and there is no explanation you would need to do that. Everybody commits errors so quit thumping yourself over it.Give Your Offended Coworker Time: Your associate will most likely be unable to pardon you promptly and you should regard that. She will acknowledge your statement of regret at whatever point shes prepared and theres nothing you can do about it. Subsequent to taking the suitable measures, ideally, you can fix your relationship with your associate. At that point its chance to proceed onward and return to work.

What is your profession ultimate objective? Ron Santo's objective was to arrive at the Hall of Fame. What is the most elevated level you are planning to accomplish in your profession? Is it to be granted a patent in your field? Accomplish a degree of Subject Matter Expert? Finish an accreditation assessment? Talk at a gathering on a point identified with your field? Become distributed in a book or article? Invest some energy considering the most significant level you need to accomplish. It will be distinctive for everyone relying upon the work you accomplish and the work you need to do. When you record what you need to accomplish, invest some energy pondering the activities you are going to take to accomplish that objective and the course of events you have. What will your heritage be? Ron Santo cherished baseball. Notwithstanding his profession playing the game, he was likewise a radio commentator for the Cubs. Past baseball, however, Ron Santo invested a lot of energy fund-raising for diabetes research. He raised over $60 million for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. This leads me to ask, what do you need your inheritance to be? Invest some energy pondering what heritage you need to leave after your passing. For certain individuals this will be legitimately related to their vocation. For other people, their vocation won't be a piece of their inheritance. When you choose what you need your heritage to be, invest some energy considering how you can start moving in the direction of that now. The start of it is a period that numerous individuals spend defining objectives for the up and coming year. This year, consider including objectives identified with your vocation and the heritage you will abandon.

Business Partnerships 5 Questions to Ask Before Teaming Up With a Business Partner
Business Partnerships 5 Questions to Ask Before Teaming Up With a Business Partner Patrick Llewellyn realized he had discovered the correct colleague when he met Mark Harbottle, fellow benefactor of the publicly supported structure commercial center 99Designs. The two men met for breakfast, and after five hours they gazed upward and acknowledged it was noon. It was a significant solid gathering of the brains, says Llewellyn, who not long after joined 99Designs as president and CEO, working nearby Harbottle and fellow benefactor Matt Mickiewicz. In the three of us, I quickly perceived related spirits, he says. Since Llewellyn came installed in 2009, the organization, with workplaces in Oakland, Calif., and Melbourne, Australia, has developed from 10 representatives to around 120 and has more than 1 million creators utilizing the stage. I helped them accomplish the things they needed to do, Llewellyn says. The accomplices may have clicked, however it takes more than science to fabricate a fruitful business. As per the latest information from the U.S. Evaluation Bureau, there were 3.1 million association assessment forms recorded in 2008, up from 1.8 million every decade sooner. Be that as it may, as the quantity of organizations has developed, so has the quantity of business divorces. Also, similar to the disintegration of a marriage, the split between accomplices can be agonizingâ"and expensive. In case you're contemplating starting a new business with an accomplice, here are some key inquiries to pose. Have you talked about your objectives altogether? One regular explanation organizations self-destruct is absence of arrangement between the accomplices, says New York City lawyer Stephen Furnari. One accomplice may be completely content with keeping the business tiny and reasonable, Furnari says. Another person may have plans to scale the business in an intense manner on a national level. Those are two clashing things that will require a very different degree of work information and stress. To abstain from butting heads later, Furnari suggests authentically talking about every one of your expectations for the business. Offer your individual objectives for the following one, three, five, and 10 years before you accomplice up. Have you done what's needed due industriousness? You don't need find after you've consented to an arrangement that an accomplice has a background marked by suing past business relates or experiences gotten in difficulty for misappropriation. To maintain a strategic distance from upsetting amazements, do a record verification on a likely accomplice on a site, for example, Intelius, particularly on the off chance that you've as of late acclimated. On the off chance that you will go into a business organization with somebody you extremely simply don't have any acquaintance with, it justifies that sort of check, Furnari says, particularly in case you're setting up all or the majority of the speculation capital. In the event that a report raises any warnings, you have to have a discourse. Likewise focus on parts of the accomplice's life that won't appear on a historical verification however could influence you later. For example, an accomplice who makes reference to a pained marriage could be making a course for separate. That presumably won't crush your business, however it's conceivable a business valuation will be required during the separation procedures. That could expend time and remove assets from maintaining the business for everybody, Furnari says. Do you confide in your accomplice the manner in which you would a mate? Regardless of what a historical verification appears, it is essential to tune in to your gut senses about whether a potential accomplice is moral and mindful. That implies setting aside the effort to become acquainted with one another for a time of months, if not longer. You have to have an accomplice you realize all around ok to trust beyond question that they will do what they state they will doâ"and know your character and needs are adjusted, says Lara Hodgson, president and CEO of NOWaccount, a firm in Atlanta that empowers independent companies to get paid on solicitations promptly and afterward gathers from their clients. Hodgson, who originates from a designing foundation, initially met accomplice Stacey Abrams, a lawyer and individual from the Georgia House of Representatives, at a 2004 gathering of a gathering called Leadership Atlanta. Throughout the yearlong program they became more acquainted with one another well and by 2006 collaborated to begin Nourish, which makes spill-proof jugs of water for youngsters. That is the manner by which they met their third accomplice in NOWaccount, John Hayes, who was maintaining a figuring business that had Nourish as a customer. Hayes approached the pair for contribution on a budgetary apparatus he had manufactured. Their vivacious meetings to generate new ideas in the long run prompted the current adaptation of NOWaccountâ"and helped the trio acknowledge they had the correct science to cooperate. I don't attempt to exceed John at being John, says Hodgson. I don't attempt to exceed Stacey at being Stacey. We each trust that the other individual does what they progress nicely. Do you really like your accomplice? Regardless of how brilliant or all around associated an accomplice is, it will be difficult to cooperate consistently on the off chance that you hate each other's organization. With an organization, it's close to home, says Judd Bobilin, author and CEO of Chance Partners, a land engineer in Atlanta that centers around blended utilize and walkable networks. You need to accept this is somebody you can coexist with on a drawn out premise. Bobilin established Chance Partners in 2009 and by 2011 cooperated with accomplice Jeff Rosen, a land financial specialist. Rosen had established a solid connection by welcoming Bobilin to supper after his private value firm chose not to back one of Bobilin's arrangements. There aren't a great deal of private value accomplices that would set aside the effort to do that, Bobilin says. All through the association, the two men have consistently organized correspondence, despite the fact that Bobilin lives in Orlando and Rosen lives in Jacksonvilleâ"both a long way from the corporate central station in Atlanta. We likely talk three times each day, least, says Bobilin. He handles the entirety of our financials. There hasn't been anything I wanted to overrule him on. It's been an extremely liquid and valuable association. Would you be able to deal with clashes effectively? All accomplices will differ at times. How an accomplice manages contrasts of assessment in early discussions may allude to their general style of compromise, so give close consideration. Furnari once banded together with two companions to buy an investment property and found that one accomplice turned out to be exceptionally passionate in an underlying conversation about the benefits of one property versus another. I recall her response was somewhat confounding. I didn't have the foggiest idea why she turned out to be so disturbed, he says. Everything considered, I ought to have taken a gander at that and thought, 'What will happen each time there is a significant choice that should be made, or each time we need to propel some money to the organization using cash on hand and we don't concur?' The association later disbanded. In the occasion you do have genuine contradictions, and you are in an equivalent organization, it's critical to state in your association understanding how you will deal with impasses, says Furnari. In the event that there is where correspondence truly separates and somebody get tenacious and there's no other component set up to determine that sort of stop, those accomplices need to go to court for legal disintegration, he says. It's a wreck. It's likewise costly. With a decent understanding, you ought to rather have the option to deal with differences however intervention, he says. Ideally it will never end up like that, however it's consistently shrewd to be readied.

10 Signs Its Time to Quit Your Job Interview
10 Signs Its Time to Quit Your Job Interview 10 Signs Its Time to Quit Your Job Interview Have you ever been in a job interview where you needed to balance that queasy feeling in your stomach? Iâm not speaking about the one from your nerves. I mean the sudden dizziness induced by your excessive eyebrow raising as you continually thought that question was odd. Oftentimes, job candidates overlook an employerâs imperfections simply because they feel they need the job. Save yourself the wasted time, heartbreak, and need to launch your job search (again) sooner than youd like. Here are ten telltale signs you should never overlook on your job interview: Late and disorganized is no way to go through life⦠The interviewer is late. They canât even show up on time for your first date? Get use to it if you take the job. Itâs likely acceptable in their culture. Itâll get worse before it never gets better. The interviewer informed you she just found out she needed to interview you and hasnât reviewed your resume. Itâs even worse if she appears to have never seen your resume. The first shows disorganization and the second shows deception. Pick your poison. Both will kill you. The interviewer asks what position you are interviewing for. See previous. Letâs play donât ask donât tell⦠The interviewer will not share why the position is open. The company likely will fire someone as soon as you accept (if it hasnât already). Get ready to be on the hot seat. She might respond, âWeâre growing!â Pause before you ask how many people the company has recently hired or plans on hiring. First, ask what the employee turnover has been for this position. Just because three new people joined recently doesnât mean three others didnât make a break for or were shown the door. Being a boss should require a license⦠They wonât let you interview with your immediate supervisor. He or she is too busy? Based on my company milewalkâs statistics from job candidates we interview, four out of five either quit or are open to leaving because of their boss. You didnât need to make it past third grade fractions to know this smells fishy. You donât like your immediate boss during the interview process. See previous. It wonât get better. We should hire really smart people that can answer irrelevant questions⦠The company isnât smart enough to know which questions to ask you so instead wastes time discussing ridiculous, never-to-exist scenarios.Yes, Mr. Interviewer, I can, in fact, figure out how many gas stations there are in the world or whether itâs faster to fly around the world heading west in a Boeing 737 or east in a Boeing 767. Nothing good ever came of careers that spawned from these types of job interviewers. This company will see to it. Eh, we can just figure that out as we go⦠The interviewer cannot clearly articulate âsuccessful performanceâ for the position. If the company doesnât know it now, it wonât know it in the future. If it doesnât know what to expect, youâll never know whatâs expected of you. I hope youâre good at guessing games. Get ready to lather. Rinse. Repeat. A. Lot. We really are nothing more than a bunch of great adapters⦠The interviewerâs description of the company sounds nothing like you. Your alignment to the corporate culture is the single greatest indicator of (employee) retention success. You can fit in and be happy or constantly need to adjust and be miserable. Choose. They must be a really focused bunch⦠As you walk through the halls, you notice no one is smiling. They must just be really busy. Id love to hear from you: Got any job interviewing doozies? Writing a Resume For a Student Loan
Writing a Resume For a Student LoanWriting a resume has always been a daunting task for college and university students. However, due to the technology advancement in recent years, writing a resume has become a lot easier. Before you proceed further, it is advisable that you understand what writing a resume means.A student who studies at a college or university can use his or her work-study loan from the University to fund his or her education. A work-study loan can be applied for by filling out an application online. In the application form, you will need to list all your accomplishments that have helped you advance in your career. The information can be made up of subjects such as examinations you have taken and subjects such as volunteer work.According to the UK government, each student's work-study loans are given at a fixed rate and over a period of time. A fixed rate is always the most common rate. It is the rate that remains fixed for the duration of the course.Your monthly pa yments are dependent on the amount of your loan. Your loan is normally divided into two different parts - the first part is your principal loan while the second part is your interest loan.If you study at an institution which has a student loan structure, it can be easy to reduce your debt burden. For instance, if you are studying at an English degree college, you can consolidate your loans by applying for a consolidated loan from the English College Credit Union. Consolidating your loans allows you to pay only the interest loan each month instead of paying both principal and interest each month. If you are studying at an English degree college, you may be eligible for other debt consolidation options such as a student loan and a non-repayable revolving credit account. You can choose to finance your education using a credit card or a bank loan, or alternatively, if you wish, you can look into securing a mortgage with your student loan to finance your education. When you have completed your academic program, your credit card may offer a student loan. This money can be used to pay off your debts. In addition, there are loans that allow you to defer your monthly payments until after you have graduated.A work-study loan can be used to help a student pay for books, travel and housing costs during their studies. With an education, students can expect more stable employment in the future and they will be better equipped to qualify for higher wages than those who don't get their educations.

Non-Compete Agreements Questions to Ask Before You Quit Your Job Non-compete agreements limit your ability to quit jobs and get raises.Would you want to know before quitting your current job if your new employer was going to ask you to sign a non-compete agreement? If your answer is, âYes!â then add talking about non-compete agreements to your list of questions to ask before accepting a job offer. What Is a Non-Compete Agreement?According to Wikipedia, a non-compete is an agreement âunder which one partyâ¦agrees not to enter intoâ¦competition against another party.âHistorically, non-competes have been used to stop former employees from using knowledge or relationships gained at a prior job to benefit a competitor or start their own business. However, according to a recent series of New York Times stories, the use of non-competes has been âexploding,â and state laws about the agreements have been changing. Some states have increased employee protections, others have made it easier for employers to enforce non-competes.Who Signs Non-Compet e Agreements?A recent study estimated that 18% of working Americans (at all levels of organizations) are currently subject to non-compete agreements. That means roughly one of five working Americans, or about 30 million people, work under non-compete restrictions. If you arenât part of the 18% now, you might be in your next job. Hence this article and my advice to add the non-compete topic to your list of questions to ask BEFORE accepting a job offer. Why Is This Question About Non-Compete Agreements Essential? One would think if an employer wants you to sign a non-compete that the topic, and the document, would be part of negotiating your job offer.Sadly, one would be wrong about this. According to the study noted above, employers âregularlyâ wait until after youâve said âYesâ to their offer, quit your old job, and started your new job to give you the non-compete.It happened to me.Luckily, I was highly employable, so I had bargaining power and was able to negotiate an agree ment that worked for both parties. However, the owners broke my trust and never got it back. When they violated the agreement a few months later, I hired an attorney to help me quit and I was out the door to start my own business. That info aside, wouldnât you rather know if youâre going to be asked to sign a non-compete agreement before you quit your job than after youve started your new job?How Do I Ask About Non-Compete Agreements?Youâll want to judge when to ask about non-competes. You might (verbally or in writing):1. Casually ask during the interview process, âDoes this position involve a non-compete agreement?â2. Ask about it while negotiating your offer, âWill you want me to sign a non-compete?â3. Bring it up before signing your offer letter, âWe havenât talked about non-competes. Will you or anyone else at the company want me to sign one? If so, Iâd like to see it before we move forward.âWhatever you do, document who, what, where, when, and how you asked the question and the answer you got. What Should You Do if Youre Asked to Sign a Non-Compete?Do not google, âWhat should I do if Iâm asked to sign a non-compete?âIf you think you would sign or negotiate it, thereâs only one answer to your question, âAsk an employment attorney to review the document and explain what it means to you.âState law about what non-compete agreements can cover and how enforceable they are varies widely. For example, California places heavy restrictions on them, while Idaho just passed employer-friendly legislation. Thus, Iâm not offering legal advice here, and I encourage you to ignore the advice or opinions (see more on that distinction) of anyone other than your attorney.Whatâs the Worst-Case Scenario on Signing a Non-Compete?Letâs face it, companies want these agreements because they believe they benefit from them. They can make it much harder, even impossible, for you to:1. Find another job â" because other employers will be nervous abou t potential litigation.2. Quit â" because youâll be nervous about potential litigation.3. Negotiate higher compensation â" because what are you going to do if you dont get it, quit?Do you want to be removed from your new job by court order because your former employer decides to litigate your non-compete â" enforceable or not? You can see that, and other non-compete horror stories, at the New York Times link above. And litigation? That means legal fees that can also do big damage to your financial stability.ConclusionIf you want to avoid the potential for serious career disruption and financial trouble, then add non-compete agreements to your list of questions you ask before accepting a job offer.Question for CommentHave you ever signed a non-compete? Also, consider hiring a coach to help you find your way for the first several mo nths.Skeptical? According to a recent Korn Ferry executive survey, 10% to 25% of new hires quit within six months because their new jobs werent what they expected them to be.Images: Fotolia/duncananderson/ilercelik/archerix/photo 5000 Updated April 2019 2017 2019, Donna Svei. Oh My Stars! YouTube Style - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Oh My Stars! YouTube Style - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career YouTubeâs Next Up stars are an elite group of lip-dubbing, indie-band interviewing, and action-comedy producing grassroots talent pulling in okay bucks from not only YouTubeâs partners program, but also a cash prize that came from making the Next Up list. No one is suggesting that being a YouTube phenomenon is a good job. Or, that itâs easy. Or that itâs anything other than an aspiration with worse odds than earning a spot in the NBA. Plus, your parents werenât hoping for this. I promise. Not with that geology degree from MIT. Or even State. Or wherever you went and whatever you got the day you graduated. Yet, consider the field of competition for a paltry return on effort. Hard to imagine but true: your average three minute upload competes with 72 hours of other video uploads added to YouTube every minute. Every minute. 72 hours of video. My calculator makes that 103,680 hours of new content uploaded each day. Good luck on your cuddly cats sleeping with their arms outstretched! No wonder no one can pay off their student loans. The YouTube payoff YouTubeâs Next Up is akin to winning the poor manâs lottery. That is, this lottery rains down a mere $35,000 (cash â" no strings!) and the right to keep producing content in your bedroom. I believe this would put winners close to the poverty line, albeit in a self-employed occupation with low overhead. But, a YouTuber does not live by winnings alone. These self-made stars are reportedly among the âhundredsâ who earn around six figures from an intense commitment to their art and their audiences. Thinking youâre going to be a thousand-aire from YouTube might lead you to produce a clip as good as âChing Chong! Asians in the Library Song,â which also netted it author Jimmy Wong a moment on NPR to explain himself. It appears that YouTube is to paid content as Ebay is to paid stuff you want to get out of your parentsâ garage. It takes nearly 3 shifts a day everyday to monitor and prod this income producer along, but itâs worth it because you may need that garage longer than youâd hoped, and are starting to think about living more spaciously with better insulation. So, really! What is the lesson to be learned about your own personal branding, given the relative success of the Next Up stars? These talents have âworked their way up from small audiences with whom they tend to interact directly on the siteâs comments boards⦠Building audience is a challenge.. It means the audience actively and intimates creates its stars,â per the New York Times magazine article profiling these heroic achievers. On your personal brand On sites like LinkedIn and other places like your blog: what are you doing to produce and push content that stands out from the clutter of other people who are trying to gain the attention of the same audience you are? That audience might be recruiters, employers, prospective clients, referral sources, new partners, or maybe even investors. How are you interacting with these audiences once youâve netted a comment or a link? Is your web presence what you do? Or is your web presence something that you have? The world and its fortunes large and small will go to people who earn their personal brands everyday, the hard way. By working it â" putting great stuff out there, shopping around for where your audience is, and attracting them to go see your stuff. Use every social media and networking form you can try. Stick with those that seem to need you. Ask them to like you. And show how much you value them. You might be next up for the next great job, promotion, project or capital investment. But before you are next up? Youâve got to show up. Author: Nance Rosen is the author of Speak Up! Succeed. Resume Writing for Mobile Phone Numbers
Resume Writing for Mobile Phone NumbersIt is important to establish yourself as an expert when it comes to resume writing. This is the only way that your potential employer can establish that you are serious about your job application. You would not want to get your application rejected because you forgot to take the time to write a decent resume. Of course, this will be fine if you are applying for a mobile or home phone number. However, most employers will be judging you on your resume if you are applying for a mobile or home phone number. Hence, it is necessary to show that you are able to meet the qualifications they are looking for in their employees. Some companies will look at your job history, skills and abilities, job titles and specific circumstances that led to these. These can vary from position to position. For example, a nurse may have experience as a librarian, so will need to also have experience as a teacher. On the other hand, if you are applying for a computer specia list position, it will be very important to have a degree in computer science.Resume writing for mobile phone numbers can be particularly difficult. This is because it is not as easy to find the companies that require resumes that will help them meet their requirements. In most cases, companies will only hire people with resumes that are suitable for their particular company. Therefore, it is important to make sure that you follow the rules that are imposed by the company.A good quality resume for mobile phone numbers can be very easy to make. All you need to do is to come up with an outline of your career and in particular, what skills and qualifications you may have. Include all these in the appropriate sections of your resume.Skills you may have include: people person, able to multi-task, etc. In the appropriate section of your resume, you may also include details of any education that you have received such as undergraduate degree, graduate school and CPA. If you have any awards for this, include them.Resumes must also be short, concise and to the point. Don't forget to list your contact information such as email address and home telephone number. If you do not have either of these, it is still advisable to list your mobile phone number so that you can get in touch with the company that you are applying to.The most important part of a resume for mobile phone number is to spell the name of the individual that you are applying to. The company that you are applying to will appreciate this and will probably use this as their first impression of you. They will probably contact you to discuss further the jobs that you are interested in.

Why you should demand something better than lectures - Debut
Why you should demand something better than lectures - Debut Why should you have to go to lectures? And dont give me any of that to learn your course better or because youre paying nine grand for it malarkey. Because thats exactly the point. Youre paying nine grand for this. Nine grand to fritter your youth away in a room for two hours at a time, listening a vaunted scholar plug his latest book. I always wondered why they called them lecture theatres. Because usually when I go to a theatre, something interesting happens. As I listened to my History lecturers deliver a talk which I was sure began some time before I was born, I wondered if there was a better way to learn. A way that didnt involve gawking at a Powerpoint as my life ended one boring minute at a time. And so should you. After all, youre paying nine grand for this. Demand something better. What you need, my friend is more active learning. But Alex, whats active learning? Im glad you asked, reader. Active learning is the term used to describe all the ways you learn things in seminars i.e. by being more active. Group discussions, in-class quizzes, clicker-questions, floor debates, technology; its all good stuff. UK universities are famed worldwide for their dedication to research. And yet, they have failed to find a way to apply this desire to learn and innovate to their own teaching methods. Now, this complacency has come under fire by students and higher education officials, and rightly so. Because despite several studies that say that it doesnt work, the UKs lecturers have continued with the bore it into you like a drill method of teaching. This is probably because it gets the job done. But does it really? Everyone might generally pass their exams, sure. But in actual fact, undergraduate students in classes with traditional lectures are one and a half times more likely to fail exams than students in classes that use active learning methods, according to Science Mag. And thats not all either. A few American studies have shown that students get a deeper understanding of concepts, are more engaged and achieve higher grades through active learning, including for the notoriously difficult STEM subjects. And heres the kicker: these active learning tactics seem to hold particular benefits for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, and female students in male-dominated fields. Whats not to like about that? Active learning isnt just better, its crucial Imperial Vice-Provost Simone Buitendijk said it best when she said: Our world desperately needs innovative, bright minds to help tackle the challenges it is facing and will continue to face in the coming decades. It is no longer enough to just teach our students to pass exams. Now is absolutely not the time for complacency. Its time for young people to show leadership, critical thinking, problem solving skills and teamwork. And theres only so much you can show when lecturers simply dont teach you like that. It requires a lot more agency on the part of students as well as higher-ups. Yes, students can be and I speak for myself as much as anyone else famously lazy. But this is for our own good. Because even though you know the presentation is going up on Canvas later, you also know damn well youre not gonna look at it after class. So start paying attention. Demand something better than lectures. Ask questions of your faculty staff. Live your life as full and as wonderful as you can. And make the most of your nine grand. How to compete for freelance work today -
How to compete for freelance work today - Freelance work is the wave of the future. If youre looking for jobs, you are intimately familiar with the tight market, but have you thought about the reasons why there may be fewer openings in your industry? It may not be because there is less work, especially if your skills are in demand. Instead, perhaps your industry is following the growing trend of hiring freelancers and contract workers to get the work done instead of advertising for full-time help. What does the workplace of the future look like? According to MBO Partners State of Independence in America report, the number of independent workers is expected to rise to 23 million by 2017. New online platforms, such as oDesk and Elance, help companies and businesses connect with individuals seeking opportunities. Savvy job seekers are building online portfolios and learning how to succeed as freelancers. There doesnt seem to be a question that freelancing and crowdsourcing will be key factors for anyone who wants a paycheck, but it doesnt necessarily mean there will be no full-time jobs. Rob Rawson, CEO of Staff.com, an outsourcing platform that focuses on full-time work, says, We believe future hiring trends will focus more on full-time work, with companies hiring highly skilled staff members globally. Full-time work is not about to go out of style. Managers are looking for reliable income streams and companies are interested in people they can count on, so this type of full-time work is not about to be replaced by freelancing any time soon. Learn how to succeed in the new economy. Whats the difference between crowdsourcing and freelancing? Rawson explains: In crowdsourcing, many different people work on a task that can be broken down into multiple small components. Freelancing, on the other hand, focuses on hiring one person to handle a particular job or project. Rawson notes, This could be for design work, such as creating a logo. These are usually fairly small projects, for example the average project is $200 on Elance. Its crucial for job seekers to recognize this global economy and how it factors into opportunities and how to find them. What does the future of online work look like? Rawson believes the following are key factors for people to consider: Increasing globalization. Its clear workers can use any number of online platforms to hire from any country around the world, Rawson says. These sites make it a whole lot easier for companies to offshore, and when the costs are sometimes two to five times cheaper than an on-shore equivalent person, its a tempting option for companies. Freelance work for certain types of jobs. Rawson says he believes short-term and small projects are well suited to freelance work. Full-time work is not likely to go away. While its clear that companies can break down projects into miniscule details or chunk them into pieces to outsource, some projects lend themselves to full-time workers. Global competition is going to be fierce for knowledge workers. Lawson explains: The types of jobs that are moving offshore on platforms like Staff.com are related to work that can be done over the Internet. Examples include software development, customer support or bookkeeping. Clearly, certain jobs are not suitable for online outsourcing.
